University of Sydney

April 8, 2006

Just felt like introducing my uni today :)

I read accountancy (sad, I know ;P) at the University of Sydney, in *duh!* Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Main Quadrangle

It’s conveniently situated at the end of Broadway, and just a 20 minute walk away from the city central.

The University of Sydney, founded in 1850, is Australia’s oldest university. It was established then to help raise the standard of education among the new NSW settlers there. Since then, it has grown and expanded, both in campus size as well as student enrolment, to become one of Australia’s largest universities. Its main campus is the Camperdown/Darlington campus (where my Economics and Business faculty is situated), which houses most of the faculties. Other campuses include Cumberland (health sciences), St James (law), and the Sydney Comservatorium of Music (music). It currently has 45,966 students enrolled in it, and a body of 8,770 international students.

The university crest. The motto (in latin) reads: “The stars change, (but) the mind (remains) the same”

If I’m not mistaken, my university is renowned for its medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, science, arts and law faculties. It also has one of the strongest political traditions among all Australian universities, with a majority of Australian politicians being alumnis of it, including the present Prime Minister, John Howard.

The University of Sydney is also a member of the Group of 8 of Australia’s leading universities.

Well, that’s it, I guess :)

Although I did find something a little odd, though. It seems to me that a disproportianate number of Malaysian students, when deciding on studying in Australia, prefer to go either to Melbourne University (especially this uni), Monash University, or UNSW (Sydney Uni’s arch nemesis! :P ) instead of Sydney Uni. I wonder why?

Anyways, any Project Petaling Street users who are also Sydney Uni students out there? Give me a shout by leaving a comment here! Maybe we can meet up on campus sometime :D Cheers!

  2. Well, maybe it’s the UNSW foundation programme at my college (KDU) that encourages students to go there. After all, once you join the programme, you’re in — and the admission standards for foundation aren’t very high.

  3. Hi - did you know there was a Malaysian lecturing in Sydney Uni Economics Department till last year? Did you have him as a lecturer? I wonder what it was like for him in the midst of other Aussie lecturers.

  4. Hey there Hello! Thanks for dropping by.

No, I didn’t know about that there was a Malaysian lecturer here last year. I don’t think he’s here anymore though. What did he teach?

Malaysian academics are generally a dedicated and intelligent bunch of peeps. I’m sure he would have absolutely no problem here :D

  5. I just asked my friend. She said he taught Economics to first years and second years.

  6. Sorry mate, I’m taking a 1st year Econ subject now, and I don’t see any sign of him. Maybe he’s a tutor and I didn’t get him.

Was he your lecturer in Malaysia? From which college? What is his name?

  7. Hi, he was a lecturer, not tutor, and definitely Economics. But my friend doesn’t know his name, sorry. Maybe you could ask your friends in second year.

  8. His name is Dennis. He did lecture in Macroeconomics and I think he left to LSE to do his PhD.

  9. Love ur uni. Wish that’s how a malaysian uni will look like. *sigh.

  10. I think a main reason why not many malaysians go to sydney uni is because of the university’s own marketing department. Applications to Sydney uni take almost forever to process while other unis like UNSW and Melbourne reply promptly. That’s from my personal experience. As an architecture student, Sydney uni almost got derecognised for its archi course in the late 80s because of some drastic changes it made to the program. it hasn’t fully recovered from that stigma and as an unsaid rule - not many people doing architecture opt to go there.

  11. davidteoh: Is it? Wow, that’s certainly news to me then. It’s hard to believe that Sydney Uni could be so ‘radical’ in that it modified its archi course till the extent it almost got derecognised! :P On the contrary, I’ve always thought that Sydney Uni was very much a traditionalist “establishment” institution instead. I’ll have to ask some achi friends about this then.

On the admin part, I have to agree with that. The bureaucracy here isn’t pretty. While other unis allow their students to change their timetables online, Sydney Uni still make its students line up in long queues at the start of every sem. Ridiculous!
