Movie Review: Beyond Our Ken

May 25, 2007

Was channel surfing today when I came across a HK show on SBS. Just out of curiosity I watched it for a while, but then I got hooked by the prettiness of Gillian Chung, and ended up watching the whole show because it turned out to be pretty good.

Beyond Our Ken is about an ex-girlfriend Ching (Gillian Chung) who wants to get some revenge from her boyfriend Ken (Daniel Wu) who dumped her and posted naked pictures of her on the net. She enlists the help of his current beau, the Mandarin-speaking Shirley (Tao Hong) after convincing her that Ken is a bastard.

After this show, I have now officially added Gillian Chung to my list of cute babes, along with Cecilia Cheung and Jun Ji-Hyun (of My Sassy Girl). Damn Gillian’s cute! Checked her out on the net, and apparently she’s one half of the popular HK pop duo called ‘Twins’ (even though she and the other singer aren’t twins. Wtf…?)

Anyway, the friendship that was formed between both of those girls was very interesting to watch. Along with this, there was also a lot of great shots of Hong Kong in it, and nice camera-work to go with it.

Daniel Wu was also great as the boyfriend. Reserved acting.

I was watching this movie leisurely until the end, thinking it would just end normally. Well, that didn’t happen. I was caught off-guard by the fact that there was a pay-off at the end. A pretty good one as well.

Anyway, good movie. Ridiculously pretty Gillian Chung.

Verdict: :) :) :)

Long Time No Write (Bad Engerish Intended)

May 13, 2007

Here I am again. A few things first.

1. Holy cow! Didn’t realise my blog is being read by more and more of my Australian friends. Gotta be careful from now onwards in what I write… :P

*Note to self: The planned pic upload of me naked is definitely off now then*

2. I just discovered this up-and-coming Asian-American poet guy called Beau Sia on the net. Although he seems to be channeling a lot of anger all the time, he is actually quite good.

Here’s him satirising the American movie industry for its love in casting stereotypical Asian characters:

And here is him replying to Rosie O’Donnell’s ‘Ching Chong’ episode in her show, The View. She was trying to demonstrate how news reports in China would sound like:

3. My hair just got killed.

That’s it for now. Over and out.

Ijok By-Election: Was Tad Bit Too Harsh In Last Post

May 1, 2007

Ok, I see that I’m getting a lot of flank from some of the readers here (including my dickless wonder pal Del) about my last post.

I admit that I was kinda mad then when I read that morning that BN won yet again on that day, and so I thought I had the right to rant a bit on that. I know that usually we blame BN for all the ills of Malaysia, but I have decided to shift the paradigm a little and instead point the finger at another equally guilty party: the Malaysian voters of all races.

Seeing that I was un-charismatically harsh in that last post, so I apologise for it now, with some reservations. But to those who argue the opposite with me, how do they explain this (some info based on this article):

1. The Chinese like to say that they are helpless when it comes to politics and have to tolerate BN. Then how do you explain Machap? Chinese-majority seat, won by an increased majority by MCA/BN lately despite UMNO’s recent antics. Ijok? Majority of them still backed BN. Better yet, how do you explain why Penang is still Gerakan-lead? Or why MCA MPs still outnumber DAP and PKR MPs by a ratio of 3:1?

2. Why do the Indians continue to give the majority of their support to MIC? What have MIC done for them? 50 years on and they still remain the poorest ethnic group in Malaysia. And is it just me or does Mr Samy Vellu sound like a very arrogant and out-of-touch leader in a lot of his press statements?

3. Where were the moderate Malays in Ijok? They had the chance to let a non-UMNO but also non-PAS party represent them but they rejected it.

Look at the scenario here. BN’s win over PKR in Ijok sends out a lot of bad signs. It says (like it or not) that the people are still more comfortable with a multiracial coalition of monoracial parties instead of multiracial parties. It says that even if BN puts an old shoe as its candidate in elections, it would still win over a quality Opposition candidate.

I rest my case.
