Kevin Rudd: New Australian PM Come This Saturday?

November 21, 2007

I think it’s safe to say now that Australia is going to have a new PM. Kevin Rudd, former Labor Shadow Foreign Minister, adept Mandarin speaker, and self-confessed Sinophile is poised to win the coming election by a nose on the 24th of November.

Throughout the whole 6 week election campaign, John Howard had been unable to close the lead Rudd has over him. Even though the Libs still have a lead in terms of who is the better economic manager, it has practically lost to Labor in every other aspect.

The Libs, I think are also consigned to defeat this time, barring any other last minute incidents like the 2001 Tampa refugees incident. And thank goodness for that, I say.

But both parties acknowledge that it’s still gonna be a tight one. Kevin needs to win 16 seats to win government. And Labor has only managed to win government from Opposition only twice in its history. Not an easy task to do then.

Odd things can still happen though. John Howard might lose his seat in Bennelong, but the Libs might still manage to retain government. Then either one of these scenarios can happen: Peter Costello takes over (finally), or Johnny ‘The Wombat’ Howard asks someone to step down in a safe Lib seat and return to head the government. If Rudd wins, the it’s almost confirmed that Costello will assume the position of Leader of the Opposition.

Whatever it is, my money’s on a narrow Rudd victory this Saturday. Finally, the Libs under the racist John Howard can be consigned to the political dustbin, where he belongs. Under Howard, the Libs have turned into its most conservative form in its history. It had become into a party bereft of any future vision, relying on Howard’s cynical and dishonest election tactics to win successive terms. Not any more.

  1. Don’t be too sure. Rudd may be charming and all, but Liberal has a new ad campaign against Labor recently.

Have you seen the recent “Don’t forget what happens the last time Labor promised young people?” ads?

They are trying hard to win the young votes
