Terrific song, the above. First heard it when watching the movie ‘In The Name Of The Father’, starring Daniel Day-Lewis. The song appeared along with the opening title sequence. Astounding Irish elements in it, along with haunting, rage-filled lyrics. The whole soundtrack of that movie is also great, including Sinead O’Connor’s ‘You Made Me The Thief Of Your Heart’.

The movie, also named ‘In The Name Of The Father’, incidentally’s also tremendous. It’s based on a true story of one of the most humiliating miscarriage of justice in the British legal system. It’s about how 4 Irish youths and their family members were mistakenly arrested, accused as being IRA members, and charged for the bombing of a Guildford pub in England. Gerry Conlon, a young good-for-nothing, is the protagonist in it. After being tortured by the police, he finally admitted to a crime he did not commit. Along with his friends and family, he was sentenced to (I think) 30 years inprisonment. The others were also sentenced to between 20 to life imprisonments. I was quite horrified that Gerry’s cousina, a young boy of only about 14, was also sentenced to about 20 years.
We then learn that when the mastermind of the bombings, an IRA boss, was caught by the police, the police did nothing even after the boss told them that Gerry’s family was not involved in the incident. They continued to be in prison for a few more years because of that.
Finally, a dedicated English lawyer managed to discover a note by the police who arrested Gerry and his family instructing the public prosecutor not to reveal an important witness who could prove his innocence. Gerry was finally proven an innocent man after spending 15 years in prison, along with his other family members and friends. Again, another rare film which managed to force me to jerk some tears during Gerry’s lawyer’s speech at the end of the film.
Verdict:
1/2
